Should we medically transport my father closer to us for his surgery?

sccaregirl21 Dec 2010
I sure would hope so...it would seem a lot cheaper although none of this stuff for our aging loved ones is cheap or free...

I have checked out of the decision making....too many cooks spoil the broth! My sibs can decide, I will do whatever I can to help without being dragged into hell.

Hi oqt-To my of thinking-the facility that can perform the surgeory BEST-is where I would have this done---Rehab-that is a differnt scenerio, as then you might feel comfortable in him being closer, so you can visit more readily. Thus I guess you have to decide what is BEST for you and your Dad and move on from there.
Best,
Hap

Unfortunately yes....you will have to pay out of pocket for transportation expenses. Insurance company looks at it that medical care is available where he is. Transporting by ground or air is at your option. Does Dad live at home or in a nursing home? If he is at home is your Mother there or someone else to care for him? Perhaps you might consider having visiting nurses come in to assist after the surgery....or even hire a private service to care for him. Or if the large expense is not a problem, then by all means have him transported, but remember that he will need a physician to take over his care before and after surgery. If the surgery is elective, then you would have time to find a physician to take over his care. There is a little more involved than just transporting for surgery...he cannot be admitted without a physician order. Good luck....it's not easy when your loved one is miles away.

I am talking about South Carolina to Masssachusetts! It seems a medical plane is around $35k and a medical transport is around$13-15k and am I right that you have to pay out of pocket???

Hi ! I have done this. My mother lives 2 hours from me and she fell and broke her hip. I had the hospital transport her to the hospital below my home. It worked out well expect when she needs to come back for follow-ups. Have to go get her and take her back.
