Is it wrong my brothers just took Mom to her friends wake and I am so freakin happy to get a few hours off?

J/K...She was a lovely lady, but I have NO guilt about enjoying 2 hours ALONE!

I would enjoy myself as much as I can. I did that when father recently had pneumonia and ended up 2 weeks in the hospital. We had a 2 month struggle over everything, tension was rising, and him refusing medical help. I called 911, APS, elder lawyer, etc...In the end, when he finally changed his mind, I spent the Whole day at ER because they had no available room. Once he was admitted, I fled! Let the nurses/doctors take care of him....

I, not once, felt bad about NOT spending the nights with him at the hospital. I had 2 wonderful weeks without him! Yes, I felt a teeny tiny bit of a guilt - so I visited him after work, for 30 minutes (his mouth just went on and on and on) and then fled for home. Sigh....That was 2 weeks of Bliss!!!! I sure know how you felt!!!

Enjoy a bubble bath and a glass of wine. Get off this site and do not think about caregiving for a couple of hours

Isn't it sad how "guilty" we feel for wanting a break of one, maybe 2 hours to have to ourselves? We wouldn't work ANYWHERE ELSE and not expect a lunch break, and overtime after 8 hours of work! Don't feel guilty...and Captain's response is classic...hahahaha!

Hope you time off was wonderful and refreshing, and no it is not wrong!

Every caretaker needs a break! Enjoy!

stevensmom Aug 2013
Absolutely not! You will be able to do a better job when you have some breaks. Can your brothers do this once a week? Do your best to find some way to get some respite, please!

Lol, I can relate! My bro took my father for the weekend and it was like "Par-tay time!" Even if my party only involved me being able to leave the dining room overhead fan on for as long as I wanted (dad has a little OCD about turning it off, lol).

(...And I thought all the easy questions had been answered!

A: No, not wrong at all!

FYI, she had cancer and was suffering severely so her passing was a blessing.
