Is anyone familar with care South of the Border?

Claire, You probably already know this: you can't count on public agencies to regulate the services in Mexico. You have to keep an eye on things, or have someone in place to do it for you. And if something goes wrong, you won't have legal recourse. Here's one thing in favor of the Mexican solution for your husband, and even if it's a bit of a simplification, it's still generally true: the culture values its elders. A nurse or aide probably won't have the education, training or technical knowledge that his/her counterpart would have in the U.S., but he or she is likely to treat the patient with respect and great kindness. If your husband doesn't have complicated medical needs, I'd say it's worth checking out.

Claire, I feel for your situation. Yes nursing homes in Mexico are very reasonable. Be aware that they can operate without licenses and are only inspected once a year. Theft of personal items is rampant, food service is not inspected or regulated. I doubt if they can handle or contain a patient who is aggressive and may wander off the premises. Even nursing homes in the US will refer you to a secure memory care facility. Don't sugar-coat his symptoms and hope they will take him. Call your county office of the aging and ask for help.

Have you contacted those facilities to find out their admission procedures and all the related info you would need? There are countries that also have care available. Our newspaper just had a story about care in Thailand.

Thank you for your response, My husband and I have spent a lot of time in Mexico- especially the area where I am considering. I know many Americans that have retired in this community and certainly would not consider putting my husband somewhere where he would be in any danger. There are many places that you should steer clear of but living in Los Angeles we also know there are many places to steer clear of here as well. The community I am considering is an all American community and the facility is located beachfront very near where he and I have spent many wonderful times together. Thank you again for your response and concern and I was hoping someone may know the process of what needs to be done if I choose to go this route.
