Elder cannot work landline phone. Should we keep it or terminate phone?
Elder has 24/7 total care in home. Caregivers have cell phone. Money is tight. Is there a law that says we must have land line phone in case of emergency?
I don't see why, if someone who can get emergency help, with a working cell phone and charger, is always there. I guess you could have an argument to keep it for extended power outages and no way to charge a phone except outside in the car, if you were remote from anyone else who could help quickly.
If it is with an agency, ask them first. It is possible to get a free emergency only cell phone under some circumstances too. It was sad for me when my mom could no longer use her Jitterbug phone. I stopped paying for it but just left it in her room so she would not worry it was missing.
Most phone companies have a LIFELINE rate for such circumstances. If your elder is on Medicaid or HEAP or Food Stamps, they will qualify. Call the phone company and ask. More information is at fcc.gov.
