Let the doctor know about the excess sedation if it does not clear up. Some antidepressants are better for some people than others, and timing and dose amy need adjusted especially for an elder. Sometimes an "energizing" SSRI type of antidperessant will kick in a little faster than the 3-4 weeks typically quoted, and sometimes they can be given at bedtime to avoid daytime sedation if that happens, as it does with some of the older antidepressants.
Rochelle, take it one day at a time. As the days go by you may have other questions about caring for someone with dementia. Many of us have been or are on that journey. Post your concerns here, and share your successes.
Antidepressants take a month to kick in properly. She may be a little sleepy for a few days as her body gets used to them. It's OK, she probably needs the rest, I doubt if she was sleeping well before.
It is always moment to moment I have found~~I am believing that you also are feeling this diagnose. I so attempt to stay away from diagnoses & be in the moment & I also say got to the physician?N.P.? Diagnoses are very real. I live in a cartoon!#*^~~~but I attempt to dance through it~~Many skills I have to deal with it, but guess what~~It's a cartoon, a Dream~~~Dance in your heart & it will manifest~~I am more, not in my head~~works for me. FIND some joy. It is all around but we also must FEEL it~~The Illusion of it all?
Could you tell us a bit more, rochelle? Was she diagnosed with dementia or some other problem? It isn't unusual to be depressed when you find something is really wrong with you. Something that may help is to let her know she'll be well cared for and loved. There are still a lot of good days ahead.
