Listen with an open mind. Thank them often. Let them do the talking. Ask questions "What if you...?" as opposed to saying " You have to...". Be sure they know you appreciate all they do. Schedule the call once a month or once a week, whatever is agreeable to both.
What seems to be working for my mother's caregiver and me, is for me to schedule a phone call every few months or so with her (I live a distance away), for about 15 minutes. I have a list of questions prepared, and I write down her answers. This caregiver is through an agency. She logs her time on their timesheet, and I pay her for her time, same as when she's actually with my mother. She's also free to text me if anything comes up, and I respond as quickly as I can.
