Can my mother-in-law get help with a stair lift?

How alert is mom? Is she able to transfer safely but not climb stairs? Will someone be with her while she uses the lift. I agree, PT OT home evaluation is needed. Have her Dr. write an order for it.

I recommend that you request a physical and occupational therapist Home Safety evaluation. In the interim, it may best to have your mother-in-law sleep on the first floor. The Rehabilitation center should provide discharge instructions specific to your mother-in-law's needs, prior to discharge (assuming she received rehab.). Most insurances reimburse for the the evaluation and additional services,if indicated. The therapists can evaluate and advise, regarding your mother-in-law's goals. The therapists can evaluate home safety, fall prevention, cognitive status, stair lift, bathroom safety, meal preparation, dressing, etc. They can also provide local resources for equipment (insurance-reimbursable) and alternative solutions. Much depends on the damage from the stroke. If one whole side is gone, even a stair lift won't help. If she is confused, a stair lift is downright dangerous.
