Can my son who lives at home own a car if we have one car already?
we have a family car and thats it and my sons getting money from a settlement and i want to know if he will be able to get one and not loose medicaid for my wife from that?
If your son has car in his name only and pays for it himself it should not effect her medicaid, however as others have said check with caseworker to make sure.
It isn't obvious why money going to your son, period, would affect your wife's medicaid eligibility. And therefore what he spends it on is, surely, his business. Are you concerned about the general impression being created if it looks as if the household has come into money?
I would say this, the car would have to be in his name as would the inurance. If he has a fulltime job, no problem but if a student thanthe cost of insurance would be too much for himto handle. I'm assuming your income is considered for your wifes medicaid. Buying a car in your name may effect ur wifes medicaid. This is a question you need to run by medicaid.
What is the age of your son? If the car is in his name, I don't see how Medicaid will discontinue your wife's eligibility based on something your son owns.
