It varies dramatically Cheyenne but I do know over here in the UK that unless an advanced directive states treat me whatever state I am in then there comes a point when the doctors decide that treatment is actually not the best option any more and that rating one thing will cause another problem to emerge and medicating at that point becomes cyclical and downwards cyclical at that.
Then they will in all probability offer morphine for pain relief so that the person can die free from pain and be at peace. What they die of ....not within my knowledge sphere but like Jeanne said it is very often lung related
The immediate cause of my husband's death was respiratory failure, due to both pneumonia and pulmonary embolism. His neurologist explained that this is the most common cause of death in the kind of dementia my husband had. I believe that is common in all kinds of dementia, but I'm not sure about that.
