Anyone bring in a home care person for a week? How much would that cost?

My mom is not strong enough anymore to walk on her own and she has full blown Dementia. I have a care giver coming into my home mon - fri 9-1. This really helps me but I need more and can't afford anymore! They charge $20 an hour which is a good rate but my mom does that get that much monthly. I have been putting my own money into her care and don't know how much longer I can do this. I have been looking at nursing homes in the area and they are way to expensive. Any thoughts in the area of Lilburn, GA where my mom could get good care? Also, I am going out of town the first week in January. Anyone bring in a home care person for a week? How much would that cost? I need help!

miajax23, my Dad had 24 hour care but it cost him $30/hour thus the weekly cost was over $5k.

Since you only want Mom to have care for a week while you are out of town, check around some of the Assisted Living/Memory Care facilities to see if they have "respite" care where your Mom will stay at the facility for a week, sort of like being in a hotel.

Have you talked with anyone at your Area Agency of Aging? They can help you identify resources in your area. If your mother is low income, she might qualify for Medicaid. If she is the widow of a veteran, she might qualify for VA Aid & Attendance.

Home care is paid for out of pocket for the most part but if your mom were to go into a nursing home you could apply for Medicaid on her behalf and Medicaid would pick up the tab.

In home care for a week would cost several thousand dollars.
