Paying a bill; Who do I contact?

My husband is in a skilled nursing facility. He is self pay with everything. An outside dental company scheduled a visit for a dental evaluation. The nursing home nor the dental company has provided me with feedback on my husband's dental health. My husband's insurance paid their portion and I have to pay the remainder. My husband is in the last stages of Alzheimer's and can not talk. I do not know if the dental service was even performed. I should not be required to pay a bill and I do not know if services are rendered. Who do I contact? Because the nursing homes social worker can not provide any feed back either. I want a dental report before I pay any money. I am the legal wife and the General Guardian through the court system.

Nana58, I had a similar experience with my MIL in LTC (on Medicaid). Communication with them was terrible, but was eventually straightened out. The whole x-ray thing is for almost any dentist -- they won't see you without a really fresh set of x-rays and often they insist on doing their own ($$$). You might want to read your husband's health insurance policy, as my MIL's Medicaid states that she gets annual dental care, vision check, foot care every 30 days, etc. so it may have nothing to do with anyone ordering dental work. But definitely pursue both the dentist and SNF to explain the bill (and ask for a printed report from the dentist - I got one for my MIL) and make sure they know this shouldn't happen again in the future.

When the mobile dentist showed up at my mother's Memory Care without my knowledge or consent, they took xrays of her entire mouth and did a general exam. They then billed me for around $300 and sent a report of all the decay they found in her 93 year old mouth. I called them back & politely told them I had not ordered their service and therefore, was not going to pay for it. But Oh My Goodness, All the Decay! Folks, my mother is 93 years old and has some pretty serious dementia going on. The only reason I signed up for a mobile dentist was in case of an EMERGENCY where she needed a tooth extraction. That's it. So don't call me, I'll call you, thanks.

The bill was deleted and that was that. They won't be showing up again until and unless I call them.

Call the SNF and ask for the name & phone number of the mobile dentist that comes to their facility. Then give them a call and read them the same riot act I read my mother's mobile dentist. Even if they DID perform a service, you did not authorize it so you should not have to pay for it. Whatever the insurance paid will have to suffice.

Who ordered the dental treatment?  

As Guardian, you have a right to documentation for an alleged expense.

You can contact the insurance company and ask them to provide data, as they would have billing codes, etc.  You can and probably should contact the dental company directly, advise that you're the court appointed Guardian and need copies of diagnoses, treatment and breakdown of the charges.   They can provide you with copies of those from their files, or in a report, as you mentioned.

No one should be entitled to payment w/o provided supporting data.   Do you really know if anyone actually showed up and treated your husband?
