Mom wants to go home from nursing home and is not realistic about her health and care. How to convince her to stay bit longer until stable?

I did as BarbBrooklyn is recommending - put it on the doctors.

When my mom said she was leaving regardless - I told her that the facility would call APS and that APS would file for emergency guardianship. Then she’d have APS running her life instead of me - as she accused me of - but hey, she had DEMENTIA. But she was still right minded enough to know she didn’t want APS anywhere near her stubborn, crazy ways.

I was lucky that my mother could still recall the occasion of a couple years earlier when she took my father home from the ER against doctors orders. The hospital actually did call APS and APS actually did begin the emergency guardianship process for my father. I accidentally stumbled into the situation and was able to stop APS - but it did put me on the hook for my parents care for the next several years.

Who knows? That actually could happen...

Anyhoo - if your mother is past the point of be able to be reasoned with - it’s time to pull out the “therapeutic fiblets” and say what ever is needed to get her to stay put.

I would tell her that she needs to stay put until the doctor says she's strong enough to go home.

Is she at the NH for temporary rehab, or is this her new place of residence?
