Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make my Dad feel more comfortable when I have to take his blood sugar? Everytime I have to poke/prick his finger he literally cringes and closes his eyes so tight and I feel bad. I try to sing something to distract it, but I just can't stand for my Dad to go through that pain even though it is for a short amount of time....😢
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the pain go away or maybe a less painful way?
Thanks in advance!
Have you checked the lancet device to see what number it's set at? On mine, setting 1 is the least penetrating which is the least painful assuming you are still able to draw blood. I have mine set at level 3. Also, it would depend on how thick a person's skin is as to what setting is necessary to draw blood. Another reason to double check the setting is sometimes when using it, the dial could be accidentally bumped moving it to the next setting (either to a higher or lower number setting).
Good luck - I hope you find something to help!
Also, I forgot to mention if he isn't on insulin or a candidate for the pump which "NeedHelpWithMom" suggested, they have different gauges (i.e. thickness or thinness of the needle). So in my case, I use an extra fine 33 gauge for my lancing device which they even call "Delica Plus" by One Touch.
Lastly, you can ask the Pharmacist or Doctor where you get the supplies from.
People suffering from a Dementia are like small children. As such, they make a big thing out of pain more so than an adult would. When a nurse would use a BP cuff on Mom you may think she was being killed. Not sure if they feel pain more or its just a childs reaction to it.
The doctor won’t start me back on the maintenance program that I was on to try and build an immunity to my allergies.
Those needles were very small. I hardly felt them.
Glad you are using smaller needles, NGE. Nobody likes feeling like a pincushion.
hugs 🤗
