Mom is having trouble with understanding how to take the pills, drinking, getting them down her throat. Have spoken with the doctor and all pills can be crushed. Looking for good ideas to mix the pills with, the best things that would hide the taste of the bitterness of the pills. She's a very picky eater already.

I remember the nurses trying to give my Mom crushed pills mixed with apple sauce.... nope, nada, never.... so one nurse found out my Mom liked chocolate ice cream, so she put the pills in that and it worked !! Mom always took her pills that way after that.

What was funny, afterwards whenever I gave Mom some chocolate ice cream [minus the pills] she didn't like the taste :P

What worked best for us was grape pop (soda to some of you). The carbonation helped dissolve the pills and the strong flavor helped mask the taste. We'd start with about an inch in the glass and add the pills. After the couple of swallows with the pills we poured more pop in the glass to rinse away the taste.

I know you said you asked the dr but be sure to read the instructions that come with your pills or ask the pharmacist. I've had drs tell me things to do with pills that turned out to not work. You can't tell by looking at all pills which one has a coating. Also some meds come in liquid form but you have to ask for that. You mentioned your mom had problems drinking, etc. She might benefit from a swallow test with a speech therapist. Sorry she's having this problem. My first mother in law used to put her pills in a little piece of sandwich bread and took them that way. That also works with my dog, only she prefers cheese. I doubt either of those would work for your mom. My second mother in law saved all her pills in a Tupperware dish. Your mom would probably like that method.

You can get a pill crusher and mix the medicine in applesauce or any other soft food she'll eat. It may seem kind of odd to put pills in applesauce at first if you're not used to it, I had to do this with an antibiotic that tasted very bitter when taken with water. I didn't crush it, but I mixed it with applesauce or even barbecue sauce. Any soft food will do as long as the person will eat it. Another thing you can do if you have a blender is make the patient a smoothie, and just drop the pill in the mix and let the blender do the rest

Another thing I thought of since pop was mentioned somewhere on here is possibly putting the pill down into a glass of pop and letting the pop dissolve it for you

My dad loved it in his applesauce. Mix it with anything they can swallow easily already
